Portrait of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown (1716-1783), Studio of Nathaniel Dance, R.A. (1735-1811).

Oil on canvas, 74.9cm by 62.2cm. Inscribed with the identity of the sitter.

Brown was retained by the 9th Earl of Exeter as a garden designer and architect between 1755 and 1778. He completely redesigned the garden and park at Burghley and was responsible for the building of the stables and the Orangery, as well as making alterations to the House.

The portrait is a copy of the original in the National Portrait Gallery, London.
