Alexander Hammond - Antiques & Works of Art
Alexander graduated in 2003 with 2;1 BA(hons) in Jewellery,Gold and Silversmithing Design from the Kent Institute of Art and Design. He has since been invited to show his work at exhibitions at Goldsmiths Hall in London and won several prizes. He continues to accept commissions for jewellery and siversmithing.
In 2003 he came to Burghley to work alongside his father, a restorer of fine antiques with over 30 years of experience. Here he was trained to restore ivory, tortoiseshell and other rare materials incorporating techniques such as shibayama and pique, he later worked with natural objects and ethnographia, many of these pieces forming modern "cabinets of curiosity".
He later set up his own studio and now runs his restoration company based at burghley house, where he restores many precious pieces for the house, private clients and london based dealers. He recently added to his restoration portfolio a very important commission to restore an early amber casket c1630 from konigsberg, a simular casket at the Victoria and Albert Museum is allegedly from the notorious amber rooms in St Petersburg . This was a long and difficult work as it had been extensively damaged and many portions were missing, however the box was finished to the owners surprise and delight. He will always be happy to explore new materials and techniques and offer an unparalleled approach to difficult and often "impossible" repairs.
