The Chestnut Courtyard

The courtyards were largely designed by Capability Brown when he was undertaking structural changes to the domestic areas of the house in the eighteenth century. He built the Orangery and its imposing entrance from the Chestnut courtyard, where he raised the height of the Brewhouse and built the adjoining Stable courtyard.

Conservation, house visiting or eating a relaxing lunch.

Burghley has many courtyards around which various different elements of estate life have taken place over the centuries and continue to do so today. The Chestnut Courtyard is the central hub for most of our visitors, whilst the Orangery Court provides a beautiful backdrop to the Orangery Restaurant. The Inner Courtyard is the Elizabethan heart of the house and the Stable Courtyard is our centre of excellence for conservation.
