Accessibility

We want as many visitors as possible to enjoy Burghley and have a range of accessible facilities across the House, Gardens and Adventure Play. Due to the historic nature of the House and grounds, some areas have limited access.

Wheelchair users can access the State Rooms and Orangery Restaurant via our Stannah stairlifts. Visitors using the stairlift will need to be able to transfer to and from the stairlift independently or with assistance from someone accompanying them. For safety reasons, Burghley team members are unable to provide physical transfer assistance. Our Porter on duty (or stairlift trained member of the Burghley team) will be available on your visit to operate the stairlift.  

Our State Rooms are located on the first floor and there is no means of getting mobility scooters upstairs. However, we have a number of manual wheelchairs available for visitors to use during their visit to the House. These are available on a first come, first served basis but it is very rare that one will not be available on arrival.

Most areas of the Gardens are accessible, although some surfaces may present difficulties for wheelchair and mobility scooter users, as well as visitors with limited mobility. Paths within the Sculpture Garden are predominantly gravel, and some open areas of the Gardens have uneven ground and no defined pathways. If you have any questions about access before your visit, our team will be happy to advise on the most suitable routes.

Hide & Secrets Adventure Play has a range of accessible features. Accessible ramps and turning circles provide level access to the lower levels of the Hidden Towers and Under 5s play structures where specially designed interactive play features are in place. One of the look-out platforms across the gorge has ramp access. All pathways have been designed to be wheelchair-friendly.

Both our Courtyard and Garden Shops have ramp access available. The Garden Café is on the ground floor.

Accessible parking is available nearby the House and Gardens entrance points and clearly signposted as you drive through main visitor entrance on arrival. Accessible Parking for Adventure Play visitors is located in the main Visitor Car Park close to the Adventure Play entrance. 

Accessible toilet facilities are available in the Chestnut Courtyard close to the House entrance, at the Garden Café located next to the Gardens entrance and at the Hide & Secrets Adventure Play toilets.

Our Porters and Duty Managers are always available during visiting hours and there to assist with any queries or concerns you may have during your visit.

Carer tickets are available for House, Gardens and Adventure Play at no charge when accompanying a visitor you care for. Please add a complimentary Carer ticket to your basket when booking online. You will be required to provide proof of carer status at the Ticket Desk on arrival. We accept the following as proof of carer status:

- A letter from the local authority of the carer confirming that they are in receipt of Carer’s Allowance, or are in some other way recognised as a carer by the local authority

- A letter from a GP confirming that the carer has registered with them as a carer

- A registered carer card provided as part of another scheme (e.g. CredAbility Access Card, CEA Card, etc)
