Recently Chartered Building Surveyor

The Estate is seeking a recently qualified Building Surveyor to assist the Head of Building Services in all aspects of managing property and estate maintenance, including all commercial and residential properties, new capital development projects and Burghley House itself and its surrounding heritage buildings.

The role will be very varied and offer a raft of challenges and experience. Example day to day responsibilities will include:

  • Carrying out inspections including: initial feasibility studies, measured surveys, pre-acquisition and pre-lease surveys, building condition, dilapidations and building pathology reporting, collection and collation of services information and plans, pre paint repair surveys, fabric failures surveys, quality checks
  • Formulating the information for Listed building consent and planning applications
  • Preparing drawings and specifications including floor plans, site plans, service plans and more
  • Producing programmes of work
  • Consulting with all stakeholders
  • Ensuring that all works are carried out to the defined specific standards, building codes, guidelines and regulations
  • Assisting Head of Building Services with supervising the Estate Maintenance team as appropriate

Key skills required

  • APC qualified
  • Excellent drawing skills and familiarity with CAD design software
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent project management skills
  • A passion for working on a varied property portfolio including heritage properties
  • Strong imagination and ability to think and create in three dimensions
  • Possess a commitment to delivering high quality service in an organised and timely fashion
  • Must be a team player with the ability to work independently
  • Full driving licence with the ability to travel independently

Business Administration Apprentice

We are recruiting for a Business Administration Apprentice to work in the Burghley Estate Office in Stamford. It is an Advanced Level 3 Apprenticeship (A-Level equivalent) starting in September 2021.

The Apprentice will assist in providing admin and data entry support to teams across the Estate, including the Burghley Estate Office, Gardens and Burghley Park Golf Club departments.

Duties may include:

  • Data entry (mostly on Excel but also on other specialist databases)
  • E-filing and housekeeping
  • Scanning documents
  • Archiving
  • Requesting quotations
  • Monitoring and obtaining relevant reports, certificates etc
  • Producing planned and ad-hoc reports
  • Setting up and closing/archiving projects and files
  • Answering the phone and answering queries or passing on messages
  • Assisting with organising training courses
  • Maintaining/updating records on a weekly, monthly basis
  • Carrying out research
  • Helping with H&S administration
  • Drafting and implementing inventories, programmes, records, trackers etc.

We are looking for someone with strong IT skills, accuracy and attention to detail and good organisation skills. Someone who is personable and confident with others, has a curious mind and who can work on their own initiative (following initial guidance, and support will always be available!)

Senior Gardener

An exciting vacancy has arisen for a Senior Gardener to join the Gardens team at Burghley House. You will join a group of highly motivated, passionate, and driven gardeners working collectively to manage and develop this beautiful garden and ancient landscape to the very highest standards.

The gardens at Burghley span approximately 45 acres encompassing a wide range of garden styles, both formal and informal, all set in a magnificent Capability Brown landscape. Much of the gardens are open to the public for 8 months of the year and include a fascinating water garden, large areas of herbaceous planting, arboretum and sculpture gardens, cut flowers, stream and rock gardens. Other areas showcase large rose beds, woodland and wildflower planting, topiary, and formal lawns. The gardens at Burghley are rapidly developing with a clear aspiration to stand alongside the best gardens in the UK.

We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic, pro-active Senior Gardener to join the garden’s management team, supervising staff and volunteers and to play a key role in ensuring that the grounds and gardens are maintained to the highest standard throughout the year.

Skills, knowledge and experience

  • Have supervisory experience in a similar role, including managing staff and volunteers in a garden open to the public.
  • Significant practical experience in horticulture supported by relevant qualifications
  • Excellent knowledge of and a genuine passion for plants, enabling the successful management of an extensive plant collection
  • Competent in the use and maintenance of garden machinery including chainsaws, tractors, hedge trimmers, pedestrian, and ride on mowers
  • Strong organisational and communication skills are essential
  • Ability to embed confidently and effectively into the existing team and management structure
  • Hard working, able to work under own initiative, with confidence and a professional manner.
  • Knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation and practice to ensure safe working practices at all times.

The working hours are Monday to Thursday 8am - 4.30pm and Friday 8am - 3.30pm. Weekend duties are also undertaken on a rota basis.

Burghley Park Golf Club - Chef / Cook

Minimum of 30 hours per week, although can vary based on events and functions.

We are looking for a flexible, adaptable and enthusiastic Chef / Cook to join our team at Burghley Park Golf Club.

Candidates will need to be able to work off own initiative. This role includes the preparation, cooking of meals, and serving food.

Experience in using tills desirable.

You will also cover for the Chef on their days off and when on holiday, as well as additional support as required for functions. Previous Chef/Cooking experience is essential.

Hourly rate £9-11.50/hour dependent on experience.
