In celebration of Lord Burghley’s 500th Anniversary in 2020, Burghley would like children to create their own piece of historical writing using no more than 500 words.
There are three age categories, 6 – 8 years, 9 – 11 years, 12-14 years. No matter what their ability or background, we would love to see as many children getting involved and we’re most of all, looking forward to reading their individual pieces.
Tell us about your favourite historical character, setting or location. This is the golden opportunity to show off your historical knowledge. Get as creative as you like to be in with a chance to win these amazing prizes:

Runaways. Fairies. Goblins. WATER PISTOLS!?! Look out, it’s Rubbish Shakespeare!
A spectacular outdoor performance on the 10th June, The Rubbish Shakespeare Company cast of four have the Bard’s impish tale of forbidden love and pixies in their sights.
Their plan, to stage the greatest edition of the Dream ever seen complete with magic in it and everything. Will they succeed? Of course not – they’re ‘Rubbish!’ Sit back, relax and giggle along, as our four hapless idiots fail for an hour for your amusement.
Full of high-octane slapstick action and mischievous storytelling, this vibrant reimagining brings belly laughs for all ages.
Expect a trail of wigs, bubble guns, life-size cardboard cutouts, and a frankly pitiful attempt at roller skating.
Your kids will love it, and you will too.
There will be a dedicated schools only matinee performance held prior to the public evening performance. If your school would be interested in coming to the spectacular Rubbish Shakespeare performance, please contact our Education team on 01780 761996 or email education@burghley.co.uk.
Please note that this event has been postponed until 10th June 2021, due to the current public health situation. All ticket holders will be emailed details of the new event. If you need to contact us concerning your tickets please email burghley@burghley.co.uk Thank you for your understanding at this time.
